“True teacher are those who help us think for ourselves.” This statement was said by Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. Good morning! Respected teachers and fellow students. In today’s speech, I will talk about Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.
He was born on 5 September 1888 in Thirruttani and died on 17 April 1975 in Chennai. During his academic period, he was a bright child and being awarded with Many scholarship. His schooling was done from Gowdre school. He joined Lutherian mission school later. For higher qualifications he went to Voorhee college and then Madras Christian. His deep interest was in philosophy. He was more into classic of Hindu philosophy such as upnishads. He has also studied Buddhist and Jain philosophy. He had also studied Western philosophers.
In 1918 he was selected as Professor of philosophy by University of Mysore then by Calcutta University in 1921. For delivering lectures on Hindu philosophy he was also called by Oxford University. He published his first book Indian philosophy in 1923. In his life, he had played many roles. He was philosopher, teacher, scholar and a politician too. He was the first Vice President of India and second President
He gave a new identity to Indian Philosophy on a world scale. He used his power by speaking about his country on big platforms. In 1946 he was appointed as chairman of UNESCO. In 1949 appointed as ambassador of Soviet Union. He was honored by Bharat Ratna in 1954, Templeton prize in 1975, Peace prize of the German book trade in 1961 and Order of Merit in 1963.
At last of my speech, I will say that Dr. Radhakrishnan took India to another level in the educational field. Even today he is considered as India’s most distinguished twentieth-century scholar. His contribution was incredible in the field of education. In his memory, we have started celebrating his birthday as teacher’s day because we believe teacher plays a very important role in the formation of human lives, better future and a better society. Just the way Dr. Radhakrishnan played a big role in forming an educational system by giving a subject “Indian philosophy” not only Indian scale but on world scale too.
