Tidal energy is energy that is generated by harnessing the movement of the sea’s waves. Energy released by movement is known as kinetic energy, and tidal energy thus involves harnessing the kinetic energy of any tidal body of water. This might involve the waves of the sea itself, or it might involve tidal lakes or rivers.
Special generators are used to turn the kinetic energy into other forms of energy, such as electrical energy that can then be used in homes. Electrical energy is not the only option here, however: all kinds of energy can be generated from tidal energy. One very early example of tidal energy, for example, is a mill, which uses the movement of a waterfall to turn a grindstone to grind flour.
Tidal energy is an abundant, environmentally friendly type of energy that does not emit pollutants. It is a renewable source of energy, too, meaning that it will not run out.
