Autobiography of a Smartphone – Short Essay

Who am I? I am a smartphone, a multipurpose computing device which is mobile and affordable for all human beings.

I am called smartphone because of my capabilities and usefulness, this distinguished me a lot from feature phones which usefulness is limited. Extensive software with great capabilities, different sensors, voice calls, multimedia, text messaging, email, qwerty keyboard and resistive touchscreen.

In early 2013, the sales of smartphone surpass that of a feature phone, this is a stepping stone on the world of smartphone.

Etymology

The first of me to be referred to as ‘smartphone’ was invented in 1992 and it was called ‘Angler’ produced by Frank Canova while at IBM. I was refined in 1994 under the label of Simon Personal Communicator by BellSouth. My refined version was an upgrade to my function, it can send and receive faxes and emails, and some important mobile application like calculator, world clock, an address book, a schedule, calendar, maps, stock reports and news and notepad. With all this, I am indeed a smartphone. In addition, my name ‘smartphone’ was coined in 1995 after the introduction of Simon.

Parts.

I am divided into two important parts namely:

  • Hardware

This includes Central Processing units, display, speaker, batteries, and accessories like a screen protector, headphones etc.

  • Software

This is the invisible or abstract part of me. This is my

  • Mobile Operating systems
  • Mobile applications
  • Application store.

Uses.

  • Text messaging, email and fax.

I am very useful in this aspect as you can use me in this contemporary world to send and exchange information over long distances in electronic means. This is also faster than post office irrespective of location all over the world.

  • Voice calls.

You can use me to place calls to anyone around the globe.

  • Video calls

I can be used to make a video call around the globe. The two user at each ends using me will be able to see each other through my screen.

  • Sensors

Like human being four sensors, I have a lot of sensors as well for carrying out different functions. They are :

  • Magnetometer

For measuring Earth’s magnetic field.

  • Accelerometer

For measuring proper acceleration.

  • Barometer

For measuring atmospheric pressure.

  • Gyroscope

For measuring or maintaining orientation and angular velocity.

  • Proximity sensors

For detecting a nearby object and it also helps to regulate screen brightness.

  • Multimedia

Playing games, watching movies, playing songs etc.

I am a phone, not an ordinary phone, but a smart one!
