Soil:
Well drained lateric soil. It can grow all types of soils. Two much clayey soils should be avoided.
Propagation:
Generally plants are propagated by seeds. Seeds are sown in the: seed bed /or decently hi field; Seedlings arc transplanted When they attained a height of 10-12 cm and are planted in rows with spacing: 75 cm in two rows and 60 cm icy two plants. Close spacing leads stunted growth, less fruit production and also susceptible to insects and pests.
Sowing:
It depends upon temperature, rainfall, irrigation, and sowing time varies" according to locality. In some parts June-Sept., and in some pockets planted in late Oct. to Feb. Generally sowing in March is not predicted as harvesting arid-drying operations are affected by rainy season. So suitable sowing time is mid June or 1st week of July under rainfed condition, whereas in irrigated areas sowing in the month of September is suitable forprofused flowering and fruiting.
Manuring:
Green manuring before planting enhances the yield by 20 %. Application of N, P and K @ 100:60:40 depending upon suitable conditions. While the entire quantities of P and K applied at the time of field preparation, whereas. N is applied in three intervals (splits).
Disease:
Plants are susceptible to wilt. Crop should be placed in well draped soil and rotation recommended to control the wilt. Virus causes mosaic disease which leads to stunted and chlorbtic leaves.
Harvesting:
Harvesting is labouritrensive operation for Solarium khasiannum because of spiny nature which hampers plucking of fruits. Therefore, using of hand gloves are essential. Plucking of berries at right stage of maturity is very important because solodine Content in berries is maximum at half ripe stage.
Yield:
Rainfed condition : 5-6 tonnes/ha and 8-10 tonnes/ha under irrigated condition.
