Meaning
Obedience means submission to superior’s will. In other words, it means willing submission to the command of the superior.
Obedience does not mean servile submission. Obedience indicates rational bent of mind. It should not, therefore, be considered slavish mentality. Obedience is the outward manifestation of disciplined mind. Obedience is a rare virtue.
Examples
1. Being obedient to the family head: In a family the junior members should obey the senior ones. It is the duty of every child to obey his parents. The head of the family should command obedience from all others. Thus peace prevails in the family.
2. Being obedient to the Government laws: The Government enjoins some laws and rules for the maintenance of peace and security of the state. The citizen must obey these rules and discharge their duties and responsibilities.
3. Being obedient to the teachers: In institutions: In educational Institutions the students should obey their teachers. They duty of a student is to obey the teacher, a junior to carry out the order of the senior. The atmosphere in the educational institution will remain wholesome if there is obedience. Without obedience, there is chaos and disorder everywhere.
4. Being obedient to bosses: The subordinate staff should show obedience to their bosses in the offices. Thus the administration runs smoothly and the nation moves in progress. Progress is possible where there is ordered life.
Conclusion
To quote Carlyle, ‘Order is heaven’s first law and all progress is the development of order’. As obedience plays such a vital role, young children must be trained to obey from the beginning of their life.
