The term “career” can be defined in many ways. The simplest way to define it would be to say that the career represents an individual’s path through life.

The goal represents the idea that a person plans to fulfill or reach in the future. Goals can be private or business.

Collectively, career goals are the goal that an individual put for himself or herself along the path of his or her profession. Starting from the point where the individual is, one is expected to have Long and short term goals towards which the main career will be driven.

Types of Career Goals

Short term career goals

Short term goals are those that are set for a time in the near future say after a year or so. The current position is analyzed vis-à-vis the point in the future where one can reasonably expect to be. Of course, form the current point of view it might look ambitious, but it is valid as long it is achievable, even if certain difficulties. Six months or a year seems a fair time to define the short term in a career. They are easy to formulate and should be related to the long-term goals

Intermediate Career Goals

They are harder to definite than the short-term. Intermediate goals should be reached in the period from 3 to 20 years.

Long term career goals

Long term goals, on the other hand, are the goals that are set as the destination of the career path especially given the starting point. Gain even though it looks ambitious it is a valid goal if by all reasonable means it appears achievable, even though difficult. This can be seen as a period of 20 years. They are much more difficult to definite than the two previously mentioned, but they can be changed depending on someone’s skills.

Importance of career goals

Setting career goals is a crucial step in starting a career. When setting goals, the person must be realistic and as objective as possible in terms of their talents and possibilities.

When defining his career goals, a person needs to:

  • Focus on the specific job in which he/she wants to advance;
  • Be precise;
  • Knows exactly what he/she wants to achieve;
  • Knows what level of responsibility he/she can accept.

The short term career goals are a means to achieving the long term goals when put in perspective, and thus the two must be thought of and planned well.
