Short Essay Value Based Education [VBE]

Value based education [VBE] refers to the education system that enhances the personalities of the students by inculcating the core human values and ethics in them alongside the training in academics and other forms of learning.

The education process in these schools goes hand in hand with creating more people with the basic values like empathy, ethics and responsibility. Every aspect of education then is woven intricately with these values to not separate academics from values.

In value based education the emphasis moves from competition to collaboration, from self-importance to teamwork, from striving to be at the top to going ahead with the class in the learning process. It is a more human-centric process.

As against the current system of aggressive competition students are educated to imbibe collaboration to bring out the best in each student to achieve the highest potential. Subjects are taught with an understanding of practical implications as against the industrially aimed system of education prevailing in the present systems. Spirituality is interwoven with the other subjects to bring in practices like meditation for centring and to deal with emotional turmoil and aggression. The education system as it is has a high level of stress that affects students. Meditation brings down the stress. Humans are not looked at as resources any more.

The teachers are trained in these values and they teach by example. They pass on these values not as subjects explicitly but build into the teaching and dissemination of the subject matter. They empower the students to generate curiosity and self-learning.

The wholesome development is then academic, moral, cultural and spiritual as well as physical, all with a human approach. Value based education takes a global perspective of growth with long-term implications on the development of personalities to inhabit the future world with responsibility, peace and fulfilment. This type of education develops secure individuals who are healthy and happy and thereby contribute towards building happy societies and a happy world.

Given the advantages of Value based education, more and more schools will benefit from making the shift towards this system.
