New Year – Short Essay

New Year is the times of a year when a New Year calendar begins, and every year an increment is added to it. Different cultures celebrate it differently. Gregorian calendar is the most widely used calendar nowadays.

The occurrence of New Year happens on 1st January. Julian and Roman’s calendar preceded it. Some countries also do not count the number of years in numerical form. Gregorian calendar is almost global now except in some Middle East countries.

The first day of the calendar year in any country or region is celebrated as the New Year. In the Indian subcontinent, there are many variations of the New Year celebrations.

Western concept

As per the Western world concept, January 1, is also celebrated as the New Year in all parts of India. This is because most of the official work and the business world in India works as per the Western Calendar.

Traditional Indian concept

In India, traditionally the onset of spring, coinciding with the March – April months of the Western calendar, is celebrated as the New Year. This is celebrated by various names and in various versions across different states of India. E.g., it is called Gudi Padwa in Maharashtra, Baisakhi in some Northern States and Ugadi in some Southern states. But in reality, there are many more variations. To take an example, on Gudi Padwa day, everybody dresses up in new clothes. The family members and friends get together to exchange greetings. There are special rituals and prayers offered to various deities. Special sweets and delicacies that represent the springtime are made and exchanges with each other.

Celebrations

Indians celebrate it by praying for blessings and also a party at the 31st December. Every culture has its traditions of celebrating and enjoying New Year eve. Record love proposals happen at the New Year eve annually. It’s a special day for them.
