Pong Dam on River Beas

Pong Dam on River beas  is located at the Talwara district of State of Himachal Pradesh in India. It is also known as Beas Dam.

Purpose: The main purpose is to store water for irrigation and hydel power.

Construction : The construction of the dam started in 1961 and completed in 1974.

Lake: The lake created by Pong Dam is known as Maharana Pratap Sagar. It is famous as a bird santuary.

Owner: The Bhakra Beas Management board is the owner.

Size: The height of the Pong dam  is 436 feet and length is 6401 feet. The crest width is 45 feet and base width is 2001 feet.

Capacity: It has an active capacity of 7290 million cubic meter.

( Note: The principle difference between a dam and barrage is that a dam is created mainly to store water and the lever of water is increased significantly. A barrage is principally build to divert the water.)
