Meaning: As the name signifies Basketball is a team sport that involves throwing a ball into a basket.

When it is played for fun or pleasure, the very basic element of basketball is to aim the ball so that it passes through a basket that is hung on a height. It can be played between two players who are practicing against each other. For this sometimes even one basket is enough. But more seriously or professionally it is played between two teams of five players each. Each team has a side on the court and it has to score by hitting the basket of the opponent team.

History: Basketball is believed to have begun in Canada and United States of America in the late nineteenth century. It then spread to many parts of Canada and United States of America. Many states, regions, colleges, etc. started having their teams. Then it spread across many countries of the world. Today it is an internationally played sport.

Court: Basketball can be played for fun in open spaces of various sizes. But professional basketball is played on a Basketball court. This court is a rectangular open space defined in size as approximately 90 feet by 50 feet. There can be variations depending on national, regional, college, university, gender related, etc. regulations. The Basketball court ideally has a wooden flooring.

Game: A typical game consists of the two teams trying to score points against the opponent by hitting [throwing and passing] the ball through the basket of the opponent team. The ball is approximately 9 inches in diameter and has to be passed through a basket of approximately 18 inches in diameter. The players bounce the ball on the floor while walking, running or they pass it to their team members till they have an opportunity to score.

Players: Each team has five players that are called: the Centre, the Power Forward, the Small Forward, the Shooting Guard and the Point Guard.

Foul: When a player tries to push or have unnecessary body contact with the opponent player it is called a foul.
